A collection selected by the master himself

What makes the exhibition at Tønder so unique is that Wegner himself helped select which chairs to display. A total of 36 chairs were carefully hand-picked and placed in his hometown – a decision that gives the exhibition a very special authenticity and weight.

It's not just a collection of furniture. It's a direct connection to Wegner's own vision.

A museum where you can touch

One of the most remarkable things about the exhibition is that you actually can – and should – sit in the chairs.

Where most museums maintain a distance between visitor and object, Tønder Kunstmuseum does the opposite. Here, using the body is a central part of the experience. For Wegner, design was not just about aesthetics, but about function and comfort.

You'll feel the difference when you sit down:

  • How the chair supports the body
  • How the materials work
  • How shape affects your experience

It is design that must be experienced – not just seen.

Design that works in reality

Wegner was not interested in creating furniture that just looked good. His focus was on design that should function in everyday life. A chair should not just be beautiful – it should be useful.

That's why it makes sense that the exhibition is interactive. Only when you sit in the chairs do you understand what makes Wegner's work so unique.

How to get the most out of your visit

When you visit the exhibition, do yourself a favor:

  • Look closely at the details and craftsmanship
  • Sit in as many chairs as possible.
  • Notice the differences between them

It is in the meeting between eye and body that Wegner's design truly comes to life.
