Tønder is Denmark's oldest market town with a town council since 1243 and is located on the edge of marshland close to the German border. With approx. 7,477 inhabitants (2025), Tønder is the centre of Tønder Municipality and is known for its historic town centre, well-preserved half-timbered houses and rich cultural heritage.

Tønder was granted market town rights in 1243 as an important port city until the harbor silted up after the construction of dikes in the 16th century.
The city flourished as a center for Tønder lace in the 17th-19th centuries and houses several museums, including the Kløppelmuseet and Museum Sønderjylland in a renovated water tower with a focus on Hans J. Wegner.
Tønder is located with access to bird-rich marshes, where the phenomenon of the “Black Sun” can be experienced, and every year in August the large Tønder Festival is held with international folk and roots music.
