Tønder Festival is Denmark's oldest and one of Europe's most recognized folk and roots music events, which in 2026 will run from August 26 to August 29. The festival combines an intimate interaction between audience and artists with deep roots in folk traditions, and every year Tønder town and its festival area are transformed into a gathering point for over 15,000 music lovers from all over the world.

History of the festival

Since its first edition in 1975, Tønder Festival has developed from a small, student-run folk event to a large, internationally recognized event. The festival was founded by students from the then Pædagogiske Højskole in Tønder, who wanted to create a local forum for folk music. Already in its first year, concerts were held in the historic Visemøllen, which is still a central stage on the festival grounds today. Over the years, the festival has grown to include artists from Ireland, Scotland, the USA, Canada, England and Scandinavia, and since 2009, HRH Princess Marie has been the festival's patron.

Music program and highlights

Tønder Festival 2025 presents more than 35 international and Danish names in folk, Americana, blues, country and world music. Among the main names are Adeem The Artist, Avi Kaplan, Dervish, Lyle Lovett & His Acoustic Group and Melissa Carper. The festival takes place in two large tents and several stages outdoors, and there are daily concerts from Wednesday to Saturday. In particular, the opening night on Wednesday 27 August features the Minority Language Songwriters' Circle in Tent 1.

📅 Date, duration and form

In 2026, the festival will run from Wednesday, August 26 to Saturday, August 29, with up to 30 concerts a day spread across several stages – large and small, The festival area opens on Wednesday at 12:00, and admission to the opening concert is free, while Thursday–Saturday is open from 09:00 to 15:00. .

You can buy 4-day ticket or single-day tickets via the festival's webshop tf.dk/tickets. A day ticket costs, for example, 650 DKK (Wednesday) or 1,050 DKK (Thursday–Saturday). . The sale of the printed program will be closed; in 2025, only digital programs and a small selected guidebook will be available at the festival site and in shops in Tønder .

The festival has several accommodation options:

  • camping: You can bring a tent, caravan or motorhome and choose a location with or without electricity. A campsite costs 995 DKK, or 1,495 DKK with electricity included. tf.dk/camping. There are also personal camping tickets, glamping tents and tenthouses as additional comfort options.

  • Overnight stay in the city: Several local providers – such as Danhostel Tønder and Tønderhallerne – offer festival places and packages

🚘 Practical info: access, transport and facilities

When you wear your wristband, you have access to all stages, food stalls, bars and events at the festival area. tf.dk. Please note, however, that smaller stages such as Pumpehuset and Visemøllen have limited capacity – arrive in good time.

The campsite opens Sunday, August 23 at 8:00 AM – with check-in open until 8:00 PM . There is also a bus service from the camping area. Industry to the festival site .
