Hidden in southern Denmark you will find a magnificent natural treasure — Tøndermarsken. Often overlooked by tourists, this vast marshland area holds a unique blend of nature, culture and history. Whether you are a birdwatcher, hiker or simply seeking peace of mind, TønderMarsken promises an experience that touches the heart and inspires the mind.
The area is part of the larger Wadden Sea region and serves as a sanctuary for rare birds, flora and peaceful landscapes. The changing seasons constantly transform the marsh into a living work of art.
TønderMarsken is located in southern Jutland, close to the border with Germany and covers parts of Tønder Municipality. It connects directly to the Wadden Sea National Park, one of the world's largest tidal areas.
The landscape is flat, open and rich in dikes, canals and low-lying meadows. The area has been man-made through centuries of land reclamation and dike building, creating a harmonious interplay between nature and agriculture.
TønderMarsken is home to an impressive diversity of plants and animals. In spring, meadows bloom with wildflowers, and streams are home to frogs, fish and insects. Mammals such as foxes and hares roam freely, and rare species find a safe haven here.
The marsh is known as one of Europe's most important resting places for migratory birds. Every spring and autumn, thousands of geese, starlings and waders fly across the sky. An unforgettable sight.
The phenomenon is particularly well known Black Sun trip (watching large crowds of starlings), where huge flocks of starlings dance in the air at sunset, creating fascinating patterns in the sky.
The history of the marsh is closely linked to the human struggle for survival. Over the centuries, local people have built dikes and drainage systems to protect and cultivate the land — a practice that still characterizes the area.
Tønder is one of Denmark's oldest market towns and serves as the gateway to the marshland. The city's cobbled streets, historic houses and creative spirit provide culture and contrast to the wild nature.
TønderMarsken is part of UNESCO World Heritage Site Wadden Sea, which Denmark shares with Germany and the Netherlands. This status ensures international protection and emphasizes the area's global importance.
Several nature reserves protect biodiversity and offer visitors the opportunity to experience nature responsibly. There are birdwatching towers, information boards and guided tours that convey the richness of the area.
There are many hiking trails that lead through the marsh's stunning landscapes. The trails are suitable for both short walks and longer nature experiences. Wooden bridges take you safely over wet areas without disturbing the nature.
Bring your binoculars — this is a true paradise for bird enthusiasts. There are many bird hides and observation towers where you can observe the birdlife in peace.
Light, movement and contrasts make TønderMarsken a dream location for photographers. Sunrises, sunsets and the Black Sun in particular create picturesque subjects.
Twice a year, starlings gather in their thousands over the marshes and perform impressive flight patterns. Nature-guided tours give you the best vantage points and knowledge of the phenomenon's biology and mythology.
