Emmerlev Church is one of the oldest churches in our area. The original building was built around 1150 and in the 15th century the tower, sacristy, porch and staircase of the tower were built.
Before the Reformation, the church was consecrated to Sct. Andreas (the apostle).
There are through the ages changes in the church both outside and inside. Among other things, a pulpit on the north side of the ship was removed in 1863.
For a time, the church was under the archdiocese of Ribe, but from 1673 it belonged to the county of Schackenborg until 1931, when it passed into private ownership.
Until 1910, Emmerlev was an independent parish with its own priest, but from 1910 -1989 it was linked to Hjerpsted parish. Since 1989, Emmerlev and Visby parishes have been merged into one pastorate.
In the tower hang two reunion bells. In 1921 they were donated by the Danish people and delivered by the Smith Ironworks, Aalborg. The previous bells were handed over for war use in 1917.
