Ruins, bunkers and excavations in the Danish borderland

Experiences that can make you wonder about the past.
Reading time: 3 Minutes

Historical excavations, bunkers and old ruins can be found in many places in the Southern Jutland landscape. Go explore sights where you can still see and feel history, for example on Rømø where there are countless bunkers hidden from the Second World War, or explore the exposed stones from old ruins, from a time no one remembers anymore.

You can find all that and much more in this post about ruins, bunkers and other excavations.

Bunkers on Rømø

The bunkers on Rømø are some of the most well-known and visited time pockets in the area. The many bunkers are spread all over the island, many of them are now covered by tree crowns, which is a little surprising, because when the bunkers were built, there was not a single tree on Rømø.

The bunkers can be experienced on your own if you take a hike into the plantations, but the best experience is clearly to explore the bunkers together with a guide, for example from Marskture or Tønnisgård. Together with the guides, you also get access to locked bunkers, which in some cases are buried under several meters of deep sand.

Trøjborg Castle ruins @Bjarke Petersen - Visit Rømø & Tønder

Trøjborg Castle ruin

It doesn't happen often that ruins still stand beautiful and well-maintained after almost 800 years, but you can safely say that Trøjborg Castle Ruin does this. The ruin was built in the 14th century on a 30 x 30 meter bank, where, among others, Queen Margrethe 1st and the Ribe bishopric have held the ownership of the castle.

Today, you can still walk over the wooden bridge to the Castle Ruins, where large parts of the castle have been preserved.

Kommandørgården

You can't call Kommandørgården on Rømø a ruin, but it still has an interesting history.

The farm was until 1867 a manor under Haderslevhus, and passed down through 12 generations. The current building was built in 1749.

On Rømø there were several commander farms from the time when whales were caught, and afterwards brought to the farms to, among other things to create oil.

The farm is today a museum, where the home and outbuildings are furnished as they were in the last third of the 18th century

Please note the museum is closed for the winter.

Grøngård castle ruin

A manor complex or castle from the 17th century located just outside Tønder. The ruin consists of granite foundations and remains of brick masonry, however, it is limited how much remains you can see, but you can still decipher the foundation of the ruin.

Langdysserne at Abterp

These Stone Age graves, which today lie in a damp depression, may not look like much, but in several ways they are unusual. Dysser and other large stone graves are, as previously mentioned rarely in West Schleswig, but they are a good illustration of the movements that have taken place in the marsh area over the past 5,000 years.

Security position nprd @Bjarke Petersen - visit Rømø & Tønder

Security position North

Security Position North is a fortification line built by the German military during the First World War. It was built in the period 1916 to 1918 as protection against an English attack from the north.
The line stretched across what was then German Southern Jutland, from the east coast at Hoptrup to the west coast at Skærbæk.

It consisted of barbed wire barricades, a double line of partially dug trenches, artillery positions and cover spaces. A total of around 800 bunkers.

Perhaps the best way to experience the security position is at Gammelskov battery close to Agerskov. The battery was a 24 cm cannon, the size of which can still be clearly felt today.

Østergårdvej 2, 6534 Agerskov
