Birdlife oasis at Højer

The saltwater lake at Højer

The Salt Lake is a large artificial lake in Margrethe Kog west of Højer, created as part of the nature restoration in connection with the construction of the forward dikes. The lake is filled with salt water from the Wadden Sea and mimics the natural conditions in the marsh, which has created a completely unique habitat for plants and animals.

Today, the area is one of the most important bird areas in Denmark. Especially in the spring and autumn months, tens of thousands of waterfowl gather here to rest and forage. On good days, you can see huge flocks covering the surface of the lake – an impressive sight for nature lovers and photographers alike.

Although you can't walk all the way down to the lake, there are several viewpoints along the dikes and roads around the area, from which you have fantastic views of both the lake and the open marshland.
