The refuge is beautifully situated with meadows and rivers in the middle of Løgumkloster town. From the Refuge there is direct access to the beautiful newly restored monastery church and to the Chapter Hall. There are 47 rooms, all of which are decorated in classic Danish design, most with their own shower and toilet.

There are some wonderful common rooms - Fireplace room, Living room, Gathering room and Dining room - all beautifully furnished.

The refuge with Danish design

Løgumkloster Refugium is one of the few places in Denmark where the original design from the 1950s is still intact. The interior design was carried out by Borge Mogensen and also contains works by Hans J. Wegner – preserved exactly as it was created.

It's not just aesthetics. The design is an active part of the experience.

The simple design, the clean lines and the honesty of the materials create a special calm. Everything is designed to support what a refuge is at its core: retreat. Here there is nothing to disturb – only design that creates space.

The furniture is not just for looking at, but for using. Chairs, shelves and details are created with a functional approach, where craftsmanship and human scale go hand in hand. Several of the furniture are even unique models that cannot be found anywhere else.

It is precisely in this balance between use and beauty that the design craftsmanship clearly emerges. Nothing is superfluous, and nothing is accidental. Every detail contributes to the whole – and to the tranquility that still, more than 60 years later, defines the place.

The story:

From the 1930s, Provost Poul Schülein got the idea to furnish a kind of home in the old monastery building, where one could come and meditate and study in matters surrounding Christianity.

The occupation postponed the idea for the time being, but in the 1950s pastor Anders Bork Hansen took up the idea again. In 1954, a group was set up to develop the Christian guest home and course site, and the word refugium was used for the home.

The refuge was built at the monastery in 1959-61 thanks to financial support from many places. The refuge was formed as a self-governing institution and the board received representatives from a large number of church, cultural and national associations.
