Rømø Fire Station
The fire station in Kirkeby was once a rescue station and remains Rømø's only original rescue station. It was built in 1887, at a time when seafaring was still the primary livelihood on Rømø. The rescue station is located just south of Rømø Kirke, positioned far enough east on the island to be safe from storm surges, yet situated so that the lifeboat could be deployed relatively quickly during storms. From the tower on the roof, rescuers could keep a watchful eye for ships in distress. In 1968, the rescue station was taken over by Rømø's volunteer fire brigade. This volunteer service was established following several major fires in the 1950s and 1960s, as the islanders sought greater security – leading to the rescue station's conversion into a fire station. It is possible to view the building from the outside.
