The Whalebone Fence at Juvre
Between approximately 1660 and 1860, a large part of Rømø’s male population took part in whaling expeditions in the Arctic Ocean between Spitsbergen and East Greenland. During the late 18th century in particular, Rømø was home to many whalers, many of whom served in prominent roles such as commanders (captains), mates, and harpooners. On occasion, the whaling ships would bring the jawbones of their catch back home. On these islands where wood was a rare resource, the bones were used as a substitute for timber. They were used to build garden fences, though these have all since vanished—except for the Whalebone Fence at Juvre on Rømø. As the only preserved whalebone fence in the North Frisian Islands, this historic site is a truly unique and special sight and an absolute must-see when you visit Rømø.
