Bunkers in Tvismark Plantage – history from the Atlantic Wall

Between the Rømø dam and Lakolk beach lies Tvismark Plantage – an area of approximately 1.5 km² with pine forest, heathland, and dunes. The peaceful landscape hides a dramatic past: the plantation houses about 15 of the 50 remaining bunkers on Rømø, dating from the German occupation in 1940–1945.

Part of the Atlantic Wall

The bunkers were part of the German Atlantic Wall – the massive line of fortifications along the European west coast. Around the so-called “Mammutbunker”, the Germans operated one of their largest radar stations in the area. Today, you can find trenches, firing positions, radar installations, and garage bunkers hidden among the trees.

Buried in sand

After the war, it proved impossible to blow the bunkers up, and instead, they were more or less buried in sand. Today, they emerge from the dunes as silent memorials – many of them now decorated with colorful graffiti, making them a popular and photogenic destination for an excursion.

Join a guided bunker tour

Most of the bunkers are locked, but it is possible to get up close to history on a guided bunker tour. Here, you are allowed to go inside some of the bunkers – and even exit through an emergency exit. A guide tells stories about life in the bunkers, the radar systems, and the role of Rømø during the Second World War.
