Juvre Sand – military training area in northern Rømø

In northern Rømø, you will find Juvre Sand, an impressive and vast flat sandy area covering 20 km². Used as a military training ground by the Danish Defence since 1954, it is today one of the country's most significant shooting and aerial combat ranges.

Today, the terrain is primarily used for training army and air force pilots, who perform aerial maneuvers and target practice against mock tanks, aircraft, and military vehicles positioned on the sand. It offers a truly unique spectacle when the exercises are in progress.

How to know when exercises are underway

When live-fire exercises are conducted, red signal balls are hoisted, and a flashing white light is activated at the top of the control tower. There is a permanent prohibition of entry into the military training area itself – even when no exercises are taking place.

Experience the exercises safely

• You are welcome to watch the exercises from the viewing platform at the car park.
• A scenic view of the area is available along Juvre Strandvej when no firing is scheduled.
• Laser lights are used within the range, which can cause eye damage – therefore, the use of binoculars is strongly discouraged.
• Information regarding access and current firing schedules can be found on the information boards at the entrance road.

Current firing times

The Danish Defence regularly publishes a schedule of planned firing times – generally about one month in advance. Always check the current times before planning your visit. Any questions can be directed to the Firing Range Office at tel. +45 7283 9550.
