Løgumkloster Church
History
The monastery was founded in 1173 by Cistercian monks by the Brede Å. Throughout the Middle Ages, the town of Løgumkloster grew up in the shelter of the monastery and church. The monastery was dissolved in 1548.
The site for the monastery was well-chosen—a location rich in streams and vast forests. Here, the monks could engage in farming, fishing, and milling. In the monastery garden, the monks began planting medicinal herbs, parsley, rhubarb, and carrots. They named the place Locus Dei, God's place.
About the Church
Løgumkloster Church was built between 1225 and 1325. Of the monastery's original four wings, only the east wing (Chapter House and Dormitory) and the north wing (the church) remain today.
Løgumkloster Church is considered—along with Sorø Monastery Church—to be among the most beautiful and significant church buildings from Denmark’s Middle Ages.
European Route of Brick Gothic
- a themed route through Northern Europe -
Løgumkloster Church was built using "monk bricks," a type of brick different in size from modern ones. The Cistercians were responsible for the knowledge and spread of these bricks. A significant difference from other architectural styles is that Brick Gothic is shaped by the material and is primarily found in the areas around the Baltic Sea, Northern Germany, and Denmark. Many of the fascinating buildings in this style are considered World Heritage. The Brick Gothic route aims to make Europe's shared identity visible to all.
