Join us for the museum's most cosy lecture, this time about Ellen Nielsen, who was a woman and missionary in China under Mao.
Missionary societies were the predecessors of the foreign aid we know today. Even though two-thirds of those sent out were women, missionary societies were sceptical about female missionaries for a long time.
Among the first women was teacher Ellen Nielsen from Holbæk, who travelled to China in 1898, where she lived and worked for more than 60 years.
When Mao came to power in 1949, she was among the few foreigners who stayed. Ellen Nielsen's story is a tale not only of opening the eyes of Chinese women and children to God, but also a struggle for education and against laced feet under changing Chinese rulers.
The lecture is by Anne Marie Ludvigsen, Curator at Museum Sønderjylland
The afternoon is rounded off with readings of old and new literature.
Everyone is welcome - even if you don't knit.
The ticket includes coffee and cake.
