This is the final lecture of the autumn season, where marine biologist Annette Bruhn will guide us through the fascinating world of seaweed. She introduces her lecture as follows:
"Beneath the ocean's surface, seaweed forms spectacular underwater forests that are vital for marine life and our global climate. New research reveals that seaweed can also help resolve future challenges within health, food supply, climate, and the environment.
Under the sea, seaweed thrives in an incredible array of colours, shapes, and sizes. The coastal seaweed forests across the globe are just as crucial to ocean ecosystems as land forests are to terrestrial life. From the poles to the equator, seaweed provides both essential nourishment and shelter for countless marine organisms – including fish and small sea creatures. At the same time, seaweed helps balance both the marine environment and the climate by absorbing nutrients from seawater, capturing CO2 from the atmosphere, producing oxygen, and countering ocean acidification.
Since the dawn of time, people around the world have utilised seaweed as a valuable resource – for food, animal feed, fertiliser, gunpowder, and materials. Today, our world faces major challenges – climate crisis, food shortages, biodiversity loss, and shifting geopolitical realities. Seaweed is frequently heralded as a miracle solution to save the world – but can that really be true?
Seaweed is not actually a plant – it is algae. Come along and learn what seaweed and algae truly are. What sets them apart from plants and animals? How do we cultivate seaweed – both at sea and on land? Learn about the sustainable solutions seaweed can offer for our future, spanning climate, biodiversity, and future foods. You will even get the opportunity to taste the future as we explore the culinary universe of seaweed.
This is an updated edition of a lecture first held in autumn 2020."
The team at Naturcenter Tønnisgård warmly looks forward to welcoming you to an inspiring and educational evening.
