Rømø Motor Festival returns to Lakolk Strand on August 22, 2026. Here, the golden age of motorsport is brought back to life in a unique tribute to the technology and style of the past, where classic cars and motorcycles from before 1947 compete on one of Europe's widest sandy beaches.

What is Rømø Motor Festival?

Rømø Motor Festival is a tribute to the golden age of motorsport. Since the festival began in 2016, it has attracted participants and spectators from all over the world who wish to experience authentic racing in historic surroundings. Here, classic vehicles take center stage as they compete on the wide sandy beach at Lakolk on Rømø.

Race Rules

To ensure authenticity and safety, specific rules have been set for participants. Only cars and motorcycles from before 1947 are allowed, and all main components as well as performance parts must originate from this period or earlier.

Drivers must wear period-appropriate clothing, which includes a helmet, goggles, sturdy shoes, long trousers, and a jacket or sweater. The race format is an informal side-by-side drag race over a distance of 202 meters (1/8 mile) without class separations.

Participation and Accommodation

Participants must register in advance and undergo a technical inspection in Skærbæk on the mainland the day before the race. This is also where the festival's race camp is located, where enthusiasts meet and showcase their vehicles.

As a Spectator

Visiting the festival is free, and there is no parking fee on the beach. To contribute to the authentic atmosphere, spectators are encouraged to dress in 1920s, 30s, or 40s fashion. It is a tradition for the festive mood to spread across the entire beach via many "audience-created camps." Food stalls and public toilets are available near the track.

Practical Tips for the Day

• Arrival: Arrive early! You can expect a queue of 1-2 hours if you don't arrive well in advance.
• Catering: It is a good idea to bring your own food and drinks, as it can be a long walk from the track to the food stalls in the large crowds.
• Accommodation: Book very far in advance, as demand in the area is extremely high during the festival period.
• Location: The race itself takes place at Lakolk Strand, while technical inspection and camping are located in Skærbæk on the mainland.

Motor Festival Party in Skærbæk

To celebrate the 10th anniversary, the shuttle buses to the party in Skærbæk will be free of charge. On Friday, August 21 and Saturday, August 22, 2026, the bus runs directly to the party grounds — so leave the car behind and enjoy the evening with Rock'n'roll and a genuine Rømø Motor Festival atmosphere.

Departure Times

Return departures from the festival grounds at 00.00 and 01.30. The bus returns via: Festival grounds → Skærbæk Ferieby → UNO-X Tank → Lakolk → Havnebyvej/Småfolksvej → Hotel Kommandørgården → RIM Feriecenter → Juvrevej/Vestervej.

⚠️ On Saturday evening, delays may occur at Lakolk, as many guests may still be leaving the beach.

Traffic and Parking on Saturday

Patience is required if you want to travel to or from Rømø on Saturday. Queues and waiting times can arise, even though we, in cooperation with other authorities, do what we can to ensure traffic flows as smoothly as possible, says police inspector Jesper Hansen. Traffic police and parking attendants will be present, and traffic laws also apply on the beach.

Closing the Beach from 2 PM

The most significant intervention occurs Saturday afternoon when guests begin to leave the festival. From 2 PM, the police will close motorized access to the beach so the lanes can be used to direct traffic away. The Vesterhavsvej/Lakolk traffic light will be closed from 2 PM to 8 PM at the latest — during this time, it will not be possible to drive through the intersection towards the beach or Lakolk. Travelers with business in the Lakolk summer house area should use Småfolksvej instead.

Other Restrictions

From 2 PM to 8 PM, it will be prohibited to turn left immediately after the beach, so traffic from the beach cannot drive directly to Lakolk Shopping Center. Furthermore, U-turns on Vesterhavsvej will be prohibited.
