Seals are a vital part of the ecosystem in Vadehavet. Here, their development is considered an important indicator of the health of Vadehavet — a lack of food, accumulation of environmental toxins, and similar factors affect the population. And of course, it is a fantastic experience to observe the seals in their natural surroundings.
The Seal — the largest predator in Vadehavet
Seals are the largest predators in the entire Vadehavet, where they hunt for fish and crustaceans. The seal species found in Vadehavet around Rømø is mostly the small harbor seal, weighing up to 130 kg. However, you might also be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the large grey seal, which can weigh up to 300 kg — making it the largest predator in Denmark.

📍 Where you can experience seals
Most seals stay in the sea, but they use sandbanks and coastal areas as resting and breeding grounds. Therefore, you may be lucky enough to spot a seal from the shore.
Remember: Seals are wild animals
Keep your distance and never touch a seal. For a seal pup, contact with humans means certain death, as the mother will no longer accept the pup.

Juvre in the Vadehavet area on the east side — here you might be lucky enough to find a seal close to shore.
ℹ️ Bring binoculars, as the seals rest a bit further out in small groups. Without binoculars, you can only just spot them if the weather is good.
