You cannot imagine the size of the Wadden Sea until you stand there yourself.

Nationalpark Waddensea

The Wadden Sea National Park is a protected area that runs all the way from the Netherlands up to Esbjerg. The Wadden Sea, an area where the tide rises and falls twice a day. The national park consists of coastal areas, the Wadden Sea, sandbanks and shallow marshlands.

UNESCO'S World Heritage

Since 2014, the Wadden Sea National Park has been part of UNESCO World Heritage

1459 km² National Park in Denmark

The Wadden Sea is Denmark's largest National Park and stretches from Esbjerg to the German border. At Højer you will find a sluice system which regulates the water level in the marsh through drainage channels and the Vidåen.

The islands of Rømø and Fanø were probably part of the mainland's coast around 9,000 years ago.

The creation of Rømø over 8000 years ago.

In the period around 8000-9000 years ago, violent storm surges created - Rømø, Fanø and Mandø. The islands were then part of a unified coast, which was gradually washed away. In 1973, in connection with a drilling in the underground, some stones were found, which are believed to be from previous ice ages.
These stones have been a foundation for the creation of the islands.

What does the Wadden Sea consist of?

The Waddensea consists of a muddy seabed where thousands of benthic animals live a luxuriant life. The biggest characteristic of the Wadden Sea is the tide, which falls and rises with an interval of 6 hours. The tide can pump 1 billion water in and out of the Waddensea and normally there is about 1.3 - 2 meters difference between high tide and low tide, or also called Ebbe and Flod.

How to experience the National Park Waddensea

01.

Feel the tide

The most unique thing about the Wadden Sea is the tides, ebb and flow, which create very special conditions for plants and animals. To experience the difference between low and high tide, we recommend that you visit the coast around Rømø or on the mainland at Ballum/Højer or you keep an eye on the water from the Rømø dam every few hours or just the next time you come to the place.

02.

Migratory birds

The Waddensea is also sometimes referred to as the birds' buffet. The Wadden Sea contains millions of tons of benthic animals, which the birds can feast on before flying on the long journey south or north. The migratory season takes place in September - October and again in March, April and May.

03.

Collect Waddensea Oysters

Out on the seabed, there are millions of Waddensea oysters, which are flooded and washed dry by the tide every day. A trip out to the mud flats to be collecting oysters is a real Waddensea experience and requires rubber boots and a long walk out into the middle of the Waddensea.

04.

Seal Safari

The seals in the Waddensea rest on the sandbanks found in various places around Rømø and Mandø. Unfortunately, you cannot find the seals on the beach with certainty as they mostly find peace from people and boats on the sand flats. You can therefore join a Seal Safari out to sea to spot the seals.

05.

Gather Waddensea herbs

The plant kingdom has very special living conditions in the salty water at the Wadden Sea and in the Marsh, which means that many herbs and plants live exclusively in the Wadden Sea area. Many of the plants are edible and provide a culinary experience for those who want to taste the Waddensea.
