History

The monastery was founded in 1173 by Cistercian monks at Brede Å. Throughout the Middle Ages, the town of Løgumkloster grew up in the shelter of Monastery and Church. The monastery was closed down in 1548.

The location of the monastery was well chosen. A location where there are many streams and large forests. Here the monks could work in agriculture, fishing and milling. In the monastery garden, the monks had begun to plant medicinal herbs, parsley, rhubarb and carrots. They named the place Locus Dei, the place of God.

About the Church

Løgumkloster Church was built in the period 1225-1325. Of the original 4 wings of the monastery, only the east wing (Chapter Hall and Dormitorium) and the north wing (church) remain today.
Løgumkloster Church is considered - together with Sorø Monastery Church - to be among the most beautiful and significant church buildings from the Middle Ages of Denmark.

The European route of brick Gothic

- a subject route through Northern Europe -

Løgumkloster church was built of monk stone, a brick with a different size than today's bricks. The Cistercians provided knowledge and the spread of the bricks. A significant difference to other building styles is that the brick Gothic is characterized by the material and is found especially in the areas around the Baltic Sea, northern Germany and Denmark. Many of the exciting buildings in the style are considered World Heritage Sites. The brick route will make Europe's common identity visible to all.
