It started at the music school's spring concert in 1972. A team of 11-12-year-old boys stood on stage, each with their own Spanish guitar. It is not clear who all the boys were, but one of them was Alex Nyborg Madsen. And there; in the middle of his very accessible solo in the song Tom Dooley, it was crystal clear to him that standing on a stage, 100% felt right.
In the many years that have passed since, Alex has been on most stages in the country with various bands, witnessing a musical curiosity that has bristled in many directions. He has fronted Witch Cross who played heavy metal, Harlot who played high hair rock, Savage Affair who cultivated catchy rock, Led Zeppelin Jam who explained themselves and Sing Sing Sing who operated between the 70s Californian rock sounds and the newer Americana.
Now the ring will be closed with the new band A Circle Of Friends. Call it Americana, roots, alt-folk or alt-country. The universe is predominantly acoustic, hand-played and with the good songs at the fore. The love for folk and country has always been there. Perhaps awakened by the Lee Hazlewood records Alex's brother-in-law brought home from his stay at the American bases in Greenland and the first guitar chords used to play Donovan or Whiskey In The Jar. Now is the time to throw yourself wholeheartedly into the old love.
In line with the original role of folk music, where the songs traveled from town to town with good stories; or just good songs that you could quickly learn to sing along to and dance and drink to, the new band will become a kind of live radio broadcast. We just play the songs ourselves and tell the stories.
Alex Nyborg Madsen has assembled a band of younger musicians who all have a deep and genuine love for everything, falling under the categories of country and folk and it is the acoustic string instruments that dictate the sound.
