7 km. hiking trail in Marsklandet.

Æ Markmandsti

Æ Markmandsti of approx. 7 km starts close to the Rømø dam, where Kildebjergsvejen and Hjemstedvejen meet. The car can be left in the parking lot by the dam. The trip goes through Marsken west of Skærbæk. You walk south parallel to a dead arm of Brede Å, which has an outlet at Ballum Floodgates. Here you will find the remains of an old settlement, Misthusum, from the 12th century. Due to the many floods, the houses were located on elevations called yards, which can still be seen today. The small Farmer's House was used as a summer residence for the farmers who looked after the farmers' grazing animals. After approx. 1 km the path turns away from the coast, crosses a stream (Røgelstrømmen) and ends on Randerupvejen by Randerup church.

Note: The tour is not a round trip. If you do not want to go back the same way, you must follow the Randerup road in the direction of Skærbæk/Hjemsted. Here you just follow the asphalt road. The better alternatives are:

The sworn way

From the road between the dam and Hjemsted, opposite Marsk Camp, a road leads north (and vice versa) - which is called the sworn road.

The sworn road heading south  https://udinaturen.dk/shelter/117993

From Misthusum you continue straight south. At the height of the Ballum mills and the storm surge column you can get over the water, you cross the Kystvejen and continue south to Ballum floodgate-inn and to Ballum Floodgate. From here you can return to the dam via the road next to the dike.

The sworn road direction north/east  https://udinaturen.dk/shelter/117993

You walk the first part of the road as described in Æ Markmandssti until you come to The Sworn Road, which turns west to Misthusum or northeast. You choose north/east, i.e. to the left through the fields in the direction of Marsh Tower. From here you take Hjemstedvejen back to the car.

The legend of the sworn way:

The Misthusum farmers came into conflict with the Skærbæk farmers over the right to use the road. To solve the problem, 12 Misthusum farmers had to swear that they were standing on their own land. The peasants filled their shoes with soil from their own fields, and could therefore swear with equanimity, even though they knew it was not true. All the peasants got off unhappily, except for one who had not wanted to swear falsely.
