Uldgade is probably the most picturesque of all Tønder's beautiful streets and alleys. The street is cobbled, and the houses face the gable with the whimsical bay windows facing the street. This was due to the fact that the land registers were long and narrow, and the houses were typically furnished with an entrance and living room facing the street and a town hall facing the courtyard.
In Uldgade and the other side streets lived the town's craftsmen and small people, while the large merchants had their much larger houses along the main street Storegade. Many of these fine houses were equipped with beautiful portals over artfully decorated doors.
